Minus Oscars?? How many Osacrs have you seen up close? every Oscar I ever kept had some nice teeth on it. All cichlids are hunters, wether it be other fish, insects, whatever. If their teeth aren't for scraping algae, then in the case of predetors like Oscars, the teeth are for grasping, so they can hold onto whatever they caught. The bigger the teeth, the larger the cichlids natural prey is. Oscars and JD's all have teeth.

Most larger cichlids have teeth, minus oscars. I had a Rapp's Midas that grown to 15" and he has some rather large orange and black teeth.

Funny you ask. I have owned a few, one of which I had for 12 years and was 14 inches long. I observed his mouth every day as it would be opening and closing as he swam against the glass begging for food every time he would see me.

I know that they also have a pair of pharyngeal teeth that are located in the back of the throat. I have never observed "toothed" teeth on his mandible.

Oscars still have teeth in the front of the mouth. You just can't see them because of the gums. It is hard to explain, but they are there. Just ask anyone who has been bitten by an oscar ;)

guess what a lfs owner tells me!!!Are you ready for this....He say's no fresh water cichlid has teeth..it's just cartolidge..."i might of spelled that wrong" lol

Very very hard cartilage that is sharp and pointy and calcified. lol

hehe. my females teeth are all over my male's back tail cause there is some chunks taken out of it. serves him right though. 2 batches of eggs no fry. she's getting a lil impatient with him i think i need another male.

My jack did a number on my Red terror with those teeth from what i can tell mostly a bottom set

Oscars got teeth but only the back teeth in the throat (lot of people say this). All cichlids have teeth in their throat, and some have both, in front and in the throat.

Even my little rainbow cichlid and firemouth have teeth, but they are very small. Theyre just a tiny fine row of teeth.

My JD girl defently has a set of bottom row teeth, Nothing like my old jags teeth but still teeth. iv been bitten by her by acident when i was hand feeding her blood worms it mostly felt like sand papper after seeing them i thought it would of hert much more than that.
