Jaguar vs. Managuense

I have 2 Jags that come to the front of the tank practically wagging their tails whenever I walk in the room. They rule the tank but are not overly aggressive, everyone else just knows to back down or run away when the Jags bite them. The RD is probably going to find a new home soon. I hate a fish that hides 24/7....(yawn). My last RD was a mean bassturd though.

With all the information and various disscusion around over this shiit, i am suprised there is not already a generally well known understanding out there.

Fair enough, to each their own personallity. But let's consider this for a minute. In the home aquarium, there are a handfull of cichlids renouned for their absolute intolerence of anything that enters their territory. And we all know their territory isn't always resticted to the confines of the aquarium. So can we find common ground on these four?

Umbee.
Dovii.
Red devil complex.
Jaguar.

Niether is the most aggressive cichlid in the world in my opinion

jaguars can be very nasty yet i've seen plenty that are pretty calm and can be kept with other fish no problem

Red devils can also be very nasty but in general a peacful red devil is much rarer then a peaceful jaguar

But in a fight between the two i'd say a Jaguar would would there a very strong cichlid and have size on there side for the most part

Well, out of Jaguar vs. Managuense I'm going to have to go with Whitney Houston. It's hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but "The Greatest Love of All" is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late to better ourselves.

Seriously though, it's a fish to fish basis, I didn't vote as I don't think it's a great question. Most people will probably say A. labiatus as very few are tolerable of other fish in such a confined space.

Instead you chose a lengthy post on the subject. If you don't have something nice to say...

As to the question, I voted Red Devil. I have both in my 210 and they each have their own side. They are both male and the jag is 12 inches, the RD 9 inches. They are each kings of their sides of the tank, but the RD is far more aggressive the other fish in the tank.

Anyway, in my experience, fish in the midas complex are generally more aggressive than Parachromis (excluding dovii of course).

In an 8x4 tank, a red devil becomes pretty tolerant of anything you can throw in there. Smaller tanks usually make an aggressive fish act on its aggressive tendencies.

Owning large specimens of both the RD and Jag ,I would have to say first that aggression is different to ability to do damage.Yes RD's can be aggressive but when push comes to shove, I put my money on the Jag.An 8" fish acts completely different to a 15" fish so comparing smaller specimens is useless IMO.Example:An 8" Jag will often be easily pushed around by an 8" RD. Now with both these fish at 15" and the outcome will more often be reversed.
To sum it up IMO
RD = more aggressive when smaller
Jag = More Territorial but will easily inflict more damage on the RD if pushed(with true size comes power)

A prime example of what I mean is the Dovii.Quite shy when under 10"s but don't under estimate its power when larger.

I've 2 med rd, ones seriuos bad and other a pussy, hides all the time. Will have to remove quiet one to save it. Just gotta catch it.
Maybe i'll get that big cat.
