I know this response is YEARS LATE haha, but I loved your post! I actually have an aquarium with several bluegill, two green sunfish, and a few Texas cichlids and I love them all... I really enjoyed reading this! Thanks
It's human nature I guess for a lot of people to undervalue fish found 'in their own back yard', at least as far as aquarium fish go. As a Canadian, my access to sunfish is very limited in nature, but there are Northern Longears in south western Ontario along with Pumpkinseeds. In the past, I obtained most of my sunfish from suppliers in the US. Several years ago,I had seven different populations of Longear going (Florida, Texas, Alabama, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, and Tennessee). The regulations against bringing certain species deemed 'invasive' into Canada have stiffened and the Green and Longear sunfishes are on our "prohibited species" list, along with that incredibly invasive White Cloud Mountain fish (Tanichthys albonubes). Go figure it Anyways here's a couple of pictures of my Kansas Longears from a few years ago.
