Im a planted tank guy and I used to keep a couple green terrors, however I'm wondering about their size and temperament and their readiness to breed, they'll have quite a few tank mates but lots of plants and small areas to call home but if they get bigger than 5" they're a no go for me, next choice for me would be kribensis but I know how aggressive they get when breeding which I can't have cause their tank ages also breed every few weeks. I don't mind if they take part in either other fry but I can't have them chasing parents. It you have any experience or have another small peaceful cichlid that breeds easily and has striking looks but isn't aggressive or apisto, that's be great thanks!!!

Why is this a Keyhole question?

GTs get bigger than 5". Males get up to twice that large.

What are we talking about for tank size and tankmates? It's the rare cichlid that doesn't get aggressive during breeding.

Most cichlids are diggers/movers as well, though that may not matter with your plants.

Keyholes are some of the most peaceful cichlids out there. Good community fish, if the other fish are too big to eat.

Don't keep them with GTs or other boistrous cichlids.

Unless it's a really quiet tank, it's not likely that the keyholes will spawn in a community. I've had to give mine their own tank to get them to breed. They defend their fry like most cichlids but definitely not glass banging psychos.

One of my favorite fish!

They'll be with 9-15 rummynose tetras and 3 adult ancistrus and loads of fry in a 24x24x20 filtration is insane so that won't be a problem total water volume for the system is about 63g with the closed loop. I only mentioned the gts because I used to keep them I'm not looking for any aggression whih is why I'm drawn the the keyholes. I'm only really into the silver keyholes the drab yellow ones make me sad and they won't fit with the look I'm going for. They should feel at home in the tank i have in mind for them. They'll be in quarantine for like 3 months because I might get wild caught

You should look into Acaras - small cichlid, colorful, doesn't bother plants. My favorite is Laetacara Dorsigera.

So the tank is 2' by 2'? I wouldn't do more than one pair of keyholes in that tank. You could also do a pair or two of Laetacara (maybe; depends on their aggression), or maybe a male dwarf cichlid with a harem of females? You certainly don't want anything that grows too large because a 2x2 footprint isn't very big for cichlids.

I've kept keyholes and like others have said they are very peaceful. I sold mine after 2 years to change my stock and they were about 3-4 inches. Seemed like they had maxed out to me after a year as they didn't really grow after that from what I could tell.
