I was kayaking today in central florida and came across what appeared to me to be about a 2 inch killifish with a blue tail. the tail was so colorful it really stood out to me. I tried to catch one to get a closer look, but i never could catch one as they were very fast, and were in silt-like soil areas of the river. Is there any species of killi or otherwise that this sounds like? it had a body shaped like killis. I almost thought that maybe they were released by someone but i saw too many in too many areas for it to be a fluke. thanks

upon stumbling upon a picture accidentally, i think it may have been a Sailfin Molly (Poecilia Latipinna). too bad I didn't catch any. I know someone that is looking for mollies! but i'm stilll curious to know what killis are in central florida

Check this link out. You can locate and click on your local watershed and they'll give you a list of the fishes found there. It is not always 100% accurate but pretty good anyway (the list for my watershed neglects to mention green sunfish which I know are here).

Here is an ID key for Peninsular Florida that might be of some use.

AWESOME tool! thank a lot dude!!!! goes well beyond what i was curious about

Your welcome, that link has come in handy more times that I can count. Good luck getting an ID.

i actually found out that they were sailfin mollies with blue tails. they looked really cool against the black silt bottom. I wish i had caught some, but i'm not sure of the legalities. mollies arent that interesting to me, but finding some by chance, catching them and breeding them is cool to me
