Hey

i know there are fully FW trevally caught in florida or rivers way up from the gulf coast , right? Do anyone from this site catch those? And if you do, what is the law regarding keeping it alive ? and the law regarding shipping it to california?

i have always looked for these fw trevally, i know they have full freshwater ones in singapore or watever called maliputo , and papio, but no one seems to be able to get them here. just wondering if someone can get these domestic wild ones.

thanks :D

There is no fish in Florida called a Trevally. Trevally is a local name for a couple of different Jack species in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. There are many jacks (Pompano, Amberjack, Jack Crevalle, Permit, Amberjack, etc) in the state but none are freshwater or even enter freshwater.

I live near the East River in Florida where it empties into East Bay and it is neat to see redfish, seatrout and other saltwater fish swim next to bass and bluegill!

Here in Australia the only Carangid found in freshwater is Caranx sexfasciatus though usually only juvies to 2 foot or so. According to the references they are found in California.

oh hmmm perhaps i was misinformed on the exact location . and yes i do mean jacks when i say trevally xD caranx is the correct term perhaps. so.... not in florida? then i'm guessin they are around other river along the gulf coast somewhere?

and i have never heard of ANY caranx caught in california and i live in california and go fishing pretty often . so i dunno, i'd be happy if they exist here ! but then i doubt law will let me keep it alive as it will probably be called a gamefish

You might be thinking of the Giant Trevally(Caranx ignobilis). These are a pelagic marine species, and although some can tolerate low salinity, they still require at least some salt, brackish water. There are other species(white, silver, bluefin, and golden trevally). Not sure about legality of keeping these, or whether or not you would want to seeing as how they get really big. to my surprise , one of my lfs had 3 today, but he said theres a lil salt in the tank which leads me to think its not pure fresh ones that i'm looking for...

o u sure? ^^;; in that case, ANYONE who lives near these fish ? can anyone get me some decent size ones legally n ship em legally ? xD

Positive, I fish at least a couple of times a week in the Gulf of Mexico. The fish you are referrencing is found no where close to the GoM or any other part of the continental US for that matter. They are found in Hawaii though...
