Leaving my cichlids on vacation for a week

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I went on springbreak for a week and i bought a eheim auto feeder. Best decision i made i had 12 ebjd when i left and came back to 12 ebjds. Setup is very easy and it cost me a little over 40. Just make sure u do a big water change day of leaving and another big one the same day you return.

Your fish should be fine without food for a week if they are a decent size and healthy. Fish can go a lot longer than most would think without food. A mature healthy fish will last a month or more without food. I would much rather have my fish go without food for a week than have the possibility of an automatic feeder malfunctioning, polluting your tank. All my fish are at least a few years old, and well feed. I would do a large water change of 50%-60% the day before you leave , feed them that night a regular amount and feed them before you leave.

I don't want to buy or trust an autofeeder. Given the posts in this thread, I think they'll just be fasting for that week.

One or two big water changes before you leave, stop feeding them a few days before hand, and they will be fine. I just got back from Mexico and left mine for 10 days. If you skip on feeding them than the water will stay better longer. I vote turn the lights off and forget about them. They will be fine.

Why is it that people keep saying to stop feeding a few days beforehand? Isn't that just extending the duration of their fast?

Also side question - the Pleco and red tailed botia's will be perfectly fine with this week long fast also right?

yes, and we stop feeding sooner or before you leave as they will not have any waist, IE poopies to pollute the tank, while most ammonia is do to respiration, (ion exchange ) waist well also contribute to this.

You stop feeding a few days before hand to minimize the amount of waste that is sitting in your tank while you are gone, lowering the temp a little will make them less active and less hungry, less active =less calories used up in turn leading to less food needed

this is some what correct, its to lower or slow there metabolism. but for just a week should not be an issue either way.
