The Harsh Reality is that Leopard Sharks most frequently are caught off the coast of California and are considered an endangered species. It is Unlawful to catch Leopard Sharks that are less then 3 feet in length and a violation of Federal Fish and Wildlife Regulations to keep a small one in captivity.
Is this still a Law? There is a guy on RC that set up a tank for a customer ( 120x36x36) and says he has 2 Leopard sharks along with a smoothhound going in after cycling.

Well I see he's getting told that it's not a good idea by others also so maybe he will change his direction, not unless he caught some tiny pups and snuck them in somehow.

One of my LFS's has a leopard easily under 3ft for like $700. Illinois
Well I guess it's all about getting caught or not! :grinno: Is it south of Chicago cause i sure would like to see one and I won't tell.:D

I just went over to the other site and the guy setting up the tank say's he is following all regulations and a commercial/ trade size is 18" for the Leopards

It is illegal if you take it undersize by fishing, and that is called poaching. But if your buying it off from a LFS. It is a whole different story on it. And from the 3ft rule thing, this is play by a sport fishing regulation law. And also you cannot take more than 3 per person for per day, so does this mean you cannot own more than 3 leopards? Doesn't sound like you have your rights anymore does it? This also goes for white sturgeons which is even much more strict than leopard sharks. And rule goes for white sturgeon is that it should not be taken under 46", 1 per person for per day, and 3 per year. There is even a much strict law to it also, if you still obtain the daily bag limit then you must not go out to retrieve another 1. So this lead you to 1 sturgeon per person then would it? But guess what, I still see them for sale on websites and LFS on a requested order. Wild life is not being controlled by the government(only if it has been listed as endangered and been closed off for 5 years or more - then the government takes control of it), only the game warden deals with it. And game warden doesn't care what your keeping in your fish tank, game warden only care about what is coming out of the water and what is going in the water(talking about fish here in general). They aren't going to come knocking on your door because you bought something that is against the fishing regulation of taking and keeping the size/daily bag limit. As long as you don't throw it back out there then it is fine.
Is it accurate or am I just putting all BS on here? All I can say is...a buddy of mine is a California game warden aka DFG.
