Have you tested your water?
No
If I did not test my water...
  1. ...I recognize that I will likely be asked to do a test, and that water tests are critical for solving freshwater health problems.
Do you do water changes?
Yes

What is everyone's preferred method of using this medicine? I've got some fun select aquatics and also have several boxes of fritz expel p. Do you guys follow the fritz recommendations or do you opt to add it one time and let it sit a week like aquarium co op recommends? Has anyone tried both methods or have some science to show what's best as far as how long it's active in the water?

Levamisole stays active for a long time but just I leave it a couple days, do a water change, and do it again 10 days later.

The stuff from Select Aquatics is potent. My fish look like their frozen in place when I put that stuff in. Works great though and I’ve seen fish expel camanallus immediately.

I also use the Fritz version and it seems gentler since the fish act normal. Not sure if it works as well but I feel less stressed using it

I use Levamisole, a different brand. I dose the tank from the settlement chamber in the sump, and wait about twenty four hours. Then I do a large water change (from overflow). I do not think it has any more beneficial effect after twenty four hours.

The correct manner to treat is treat using dosage stated below (2 ppm) for 24 hrs, wait 2 weeks, and treat again.

The scientific community considers 2ppm of Levasimole HCl to be an adequate dosage, which works out to 1gr per 100 gallons, not 5gr per 100 gallons as constantly reported on the internet.

Dr. Yanong also suggests that the treatment duration be 24 hrs.

I think you’re right…the common online dose is way too high. My fish go into a catatonic state when following the 5gr per 100 gallon dosage. The sickest fish die off and the rest pull through but it’s rough.

Fritz Expel P must be using the correct dosage as my fish don’t look stressed at all.

Correct, when the proper dose is administered fish do not typically show serious symptoms of stress.

I typically purchase wild caught fish and sometimes get a super worm that’s hard to treat. I’ve used that’s stuff to kick some of the most stubborn internal parasites. I’ve just mixed it right in the water. I’ve even mixed it with food and used the Seachem focus for bad cases. I typically follow the instructions unless things are bad I’ve even done a dose and a half and the fish weren’t harmed.
I was treating wild caught festae, Cubans and aquarium bred Freddy’s.

Good luck!

FYI - over the years I have read accounts from trustworthy sources, who have overdosed using the internet dose commonly repeated on the internet over the years, and killed their fish. Some species of fish appear to be highly sensitive to this medication. Also, the only "parasites" this drug kills/treats, is worms. It's a deworming agent. It's what ranchers/farmers use to deworm cattle, pig, sheep, etc.

Levamisole HCL powder is easily dissolved and requires very high dosage rates to become lethal.

Fish stress - behaviour should always be monitored during medication to avoid toxicity. Due to the large margin between stress and death, this is a good one for inexperienced fish keepers to learn with.

I was pointing out the fritz product contains levamisole therefore in just my experience alone I use it for worms or parasites. I haven’t lost a fish. I only keep central and South American cichlids.
