Live Foods for Crayfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
once, my blue even ate a portion of his own shell after molting. i've heard that they often do that to replenish their calcium levels, because after a molt, their new shells are soft for a few days.

i feed my cray guppies, rosies, fatheads, golfish, whatever plants i have in my tank, and apparently he eats my driftwood too! oh yeah and my blue cray killed and devoured my white cray too :( may you RIP Casper...
I'm glad you said rosies - I already feed those to the oscars (seperate tank from crayfish).

I'm not to certain but it seems that they can really eat anything. I personally avoid feeding them other inverts so they can't catch any diseases. I fed some of my other crays shrimp pellets which kept the food cheap but my current one only seems to eat live food. It rarely touches my moss now but when I first put it in he had a field day. Guess hes spoiled... I'd say stick with the green foods like cucumbers and types of lettuces for veggies just to be on the safe side cuz I don't want to give you false information, just basing it on personal experience. Haha my cray loves to try and eat bubbles from the airstone too! You can try and feed him those!

This is normal. I never take out my shells for this reason.

Any fruits or vegetables I should avoid feeding?

I hear they love peas. I tried to feed my babies peas. But they were to small to get a good hold of them and just ended up rolling them around. It was really cute. Not to sure about fruits. Veggies are safe though.

mine just cleaned up the scraps including shrimp and fish...they would snag minnows also....they don't last long in my tank, but while they are there they seem to thrive and even try to breed...they don't last long cause they get put in with 3 tsns, a gar, an aro, a jd, a yellow bullhead and a rbpacu....
