well here in san diego we have alot of asian supermarkets that sell live fish for human consumption. is the regulations on these fish higher than the feeders (live/frozen) we can buy from lfs? it may sound funny, but people are pretty surprised when they find out what the allowable quality some of the food that is sold for human consumption are, compared to our animals. eukanuba dog food for example, i met a guy who said they use better quality chicken in their puppy formula, than the school districts use for lunches. i wondered if i could find someone who could help me with this question? ive just found that, some of the feeders appear to be cheaper at the asian markets, but the names on the package is different. good example: silversides from lfs, compared to blue anchovies at ranch99 market. appeared to be the same fish to me, but 8lb bag- only $4.00.

im not trying to deter people from buying from our lfs
But if the price is rite...I guess the tilapia would be a good buy if what you are keeping is big enough and will them.I buy a two pound bag of frozen smelt from ShopRite for three bucks and my cichla loves em.Interesting about the chicken quality comparison also.

If you're talking about buying any fresh cut pieces of Tilapia from markets, then it's fine. I don't think they're suppose to sell them live and that would be one big feeder:eek: I buy frozen ghost shrimps from an Asian Market.

And when it comes to the care...I don't think there's a big difference. They both eat pellets, treated with hormones and antibiotics, and are in overstocked tanks/ponds.

no you can buy live. i actually buy them and take them fishing as bait when i go to arizona fishing for flatheads. they dont give them to you in a bucket, just in the plastic bags but, i just have my cooler in the car with a battery op'd pump. i usually pick up 10-15, 7-10" fish and it costs less than $10. i have to ask for the smaller ones because most are 1-2lbs, 10-14in. im only asking because my tsn x rtc, rtc, paroon are starting to really put on size. when i do move them to the pond, im wondering is this going to be a viable option. what do guys with the huge arapaimas and catfish feed?

you can buy them live. i wouldnt throw the talapia in my tank though....they have nasty diseases on them. if you do buy them put them in the freezer. that should kill all the nasty things.

Same as for lfs feeders... quarantine it.. feed it.. most people forget. we clean, and cook the fish we consume in general. otherwise you want to look for "sushi grade" fish. num num ahi tuna...
