I find this longear to be odd as you noticed that there are no white edges on ear flap as the normal longears have.
In the full sized image you can see the white lining the trailing edge of the gill flap. You can't really see it in the re-sizedweb photo. For you Latin types and fish scholars this is a Lepomis megalotis. They are one of my favorite fish. We catch them by the dozens and they make good eating if you don't mind cleaning a bunch of little guys for a fish fry.

The Current is my favorite flyfishing river. I've caught a few smallmouth in there too. It's good to see that the natives aren't completely run off by the trout.

Yeah I like the Current .....just too many floaters for my taste; great for a party ...not good if you just want to fish and get away from everyone. "An article on fishing the Current River wouldn't be complete without a mention of the canoe traffic. The Current is difficult to fish on summer weekends. It recieves intense use by recreational floaters, many of whom are drunk and have never been in a canoe before. At best it's frustrating, and at worst it can be dangerous. Our advice is to come either in the off-season or on a weekday." This was a artice on fishing in the Ozarks.....did you know we have our own sub-species of Smallmouth which gets wider and has a bigger "hump" than the Northern variety its called the the "Neosho Smallmouth"?

I've never even heard of that. Is that a recent taxonomic addition? No mention in The Fishes of Missouri. That's really neat though. As far as canoe traffic goes, try fishing further up river. No canoers between the end of the park and tan vat, and I'm the only one I've ever seen float from tan vat to baptist. I do see a few canoes from baptist down river, but it's still pretty tricky to navigate so most of the big family floats avoid it and it's my favorite section to fish. I've waded and fished the first 20-25 miles of the current over my Spring breaks over the last 4 years and I'm always astounded by its wild beauty the minute you get outside Montauk. If you ever get the chance, float the eleven point river. I've done the first 50 miles of that a couple times and it's one heck of a trout river. That's where I caught my first chain pickerel on fly and has started me wanting one for a tank ever since. I just don't have the facilities right now unfortunately.

Yes the designation is new much like the "Alabama Spotted Bass" its also called "Ozark Bass" and theyre in Soutrhwestern Mo. I have heard about the area outside Montauk but never been there, The rivers I do fish on alot are the Gasconade, James, Little Sac in Southwestern Mo. ; Ive only been on the Current a couple of times and loved the beauty , but hated the traffic. I have heard wonderfull things about the Eleven point......does it have the traffic the Current has? Thanks Joe.

Very beautiful sunfish, I would've kept him. There aren't many sunfish where I live, so to me its uncommon to find them

I would say that the eleven point gets less traffic than the current. You really should try the blue ribbon area downstream of the park. It feels like you were teleported to Wyoming or Montana down there. I backpack the river in the wild section every Spring and I've caught at least one lunker every year. In the Spring I usually have the whole river to myself. I usually don't see another person for days. Since the eleven point is only really accessible by boat, the river has remained very wild looking. That's cool that you fish the James. My brother in law's parents live on the James and I've only fished it once, but did really well. Here's a couple pics from the wild area from my 2009 trip. BTW, it snowed later the same day. I still fished in shorts though.

Beautifull, scenery.....hardcore fishing in shorts in the spring time! I lived in California for years and really missed the Ozarks outdoors, even though i make less money I had to move back (and I lived in Northern Cali); one day Ill definately have to try the Eleven point.
