I agree with all of the above. Although you obviously cannot keep an infinite amount of fish in a tank, problems arise more, I find, due to the bad combinations of fish, more so than the quantity of fish.
I have 21 adult tropheus (Tanganyika cichlid) in a 90 gallon with no issues (they have to be kept in large groups). But I bet if I had 7 different species of three each of Malawis it would be 21 fish too, but there would be problems.
Too many people feel the need to have one of two everything, and then there are big problems.
