Yes there is some truth behind this. I have two tanks setup. One is setup with dark substrate to make the bichirs looked dark. The other is setup with a beige color bottom which make my bichirs very light in colors. Bichirs color will change from dark to light and vice versa. I think the main reason behind this is in the wild this is a camouflouge as a defensive mechanism and for hunting prey.
