Are you absolutely certain it was the sand? What do you keep near the tanks? New glade air freshener? Automatic one maybe??

I once bought one and placed it near some plants and it killed my plants.

Anything new sitting above your tank that could have dripped, dropped, or leaked into your tank?

Or is there a window near your tank? Window open? Maybe something could have been carried in the wind?

it was a new tank with new sand staight from the sac. I installed a new HMF in the guppy tank but that tank was uneffected till I threw in the loaches and roselines form the new bottom tank when they started to float and act wierd .
ther is nothing that close by that could have caused issues .iv had tanks in this corner of the house for 18months with out any issues . I think it was the sand, probably cross contaminated like other have mentioned before.

I was just shocked how quickly the cories started to react to whatever came in from the bottom tank with the loaches/roselines, iv never killed a tank so quickly and completely .:(

That is very unfortunate.

I’m sorry for you many loses :-(

I’ve had quick rite play sand that I bought from home depot in a couple of my tanks for over 6 months no problems, didn’t rinse either. sounds like something with your parameters

Did you do water changes (also the guppy tank) before this happened?

Reason I’m asking is that members (including myself) have had total fish losses like yours after a water change, suspecting the water company flushed pipes and shocked the water supply.

Sounds like toxins on the sand. Never heard of or seen oily residue on sand before. I just used the Home Depot sand and rinse until clear....just
I used the this play sand and it required a lot of rinsing to remove the oily residue.

Sorry to hear! Sounds like toxins on the sand. Never heard of or seen oily residue on sand before. I've used the Home Depot sand plenty of times and rinse until clear....just dust but never any oil.

I've lost fish in weird ways like this when I ordered aquatic plants from a farm that was grown emmersed and was likely sprayed with pesticides and when the water company added something. Possibilities are endless. I'd do a full cleanout and run a bunch of carbon

I had just done a 50% water change on my guppie tank an hour or 2 before this happened. so I kinda ruled out the water as the issue that way.

today is my WC day so I will be tested parameters on both effected tanks and removing all the sand aswell.
I'll post up results later
