Can anyone help me ID and possibly treat this small wart-like growth on one of my shubunkin? My research leads to neurofibroma or lymphocystis maybe??? Been noticeable maybe a couple days now.

I'm heading to get some salt right now if needed...read something about heating the water to mid-70s for a while helping with lymphocystis. But admittedly I don't know for sure what I'm looking at here, could use some help heading this thing off.

Wow...what are the odds? I just noticed an almost-identical thingamajig on one of my goldies a couple weeks ago. Same shape and colour, way back on the caudal peduncle and nearer the top. The fish seemed fine, ate and acted normally, wasn't flashing or scratching at all. The thing appeared pretty much overnight; I usually spend an hour or so in a semi-comatose state in front of that tank each day and watch these fish pretty closely, and I am positive this thing did not grow gradually. It stayed more or less unchanged for about three days, perhaps a bit smaller on day 3, and then over the next couple days it shrank and disappeared, leaving no trace. The fish still seems fine, as do all the others.

Tank temperature has been around 55F for the past couple months, has dipped down as low as 50 during a couple of cold snaps like the one we are having right now. I still feed, although very lightly, and the goldies, Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus, Cichlasoma dimerus, Garra rufa and G,flavatra and big Hypostomus laplatae are all still fairly active and eating.

When I first saw the thing on my fish my mind went immediately to lymphocystis as well. I'm glad I was wrong...at least I think I was wrong. Is your fish behaving normally? I'd be tempted to just wait and observe a bit before taking any extreme measures, although some salt couldn't hurt. Keep us posted!

Yes the affected fish is behaving perfectly fine, eating, no flashing that I've seen. Hes one of the more aggro fish in the tank and still bossing others around. Nothing like the others I had that died earlier from fungal infection/fuzzy growths around gills who would become lethargic and stop eating.

I will say that this fish does display more noticeable genetic uh...manipulation, fancification I guess than the others. Note his somewhat deformed dorsal fin that terminates in a sort of rat-tail and somewhat bulbous shape.

Id try dimilin… its pretty evasive. U can do 10x the dose and its still safe. Its worked well for me in the past for similiar looking things. It does take a while tho. 2-3 treatments over a month. U can get it on ebay. Its actually an older pesticide that was common in the hobby but becoming harder to find. One i used from ebay is called “dimilin x”

So you are thinking this is some kind of external parasite, i.e. anchorworm or similar? Excellent! I was just thinking that I needed something new to worry about...:)

Mind you, my goldies don't suffer from any of the excessive fancification that @Backfromthedead is seeing in his fish. It's just one of the advantages of keeping fish that cost less than 20 cents apiece to the original purchaser...from whom I got them for free! :)

I had 1 system where this would happen on a RTGG and tinfoil barbs maybe once every couple yrs. It was usually in the summer in higher temps tho. Im surprised its hitting this time of year. Regardless, the dimilin would knock it out every time and ive been “clean” 😂 for 4-5yrs now. Was in a ray system also and they never missed a beat for eating or normal activity.

😂 Yeah, some kind of external parasite IMO… had a RTGG come in with it and i fought it for years. Went as far as pulling the fish, tweezing the thing off then betadine solution on the wound, but in the end the dimilin worked and kept it away.

Cool. First thought was some kind of parasite. 1 new shubunkin joined them a couple weeks back after clearing quarantine, maybe not so clear after all, brought some sleepers through apparently.
