why cant you just lower the water level

Because he doesn't need to. As I posted before, The mata is just fine.

Cool set up! Matas are one of my favorite turtles and I love the 2 car garage look for the bass! :D

Enjoy having your fish bitten in half.. and having an un-happy mata..

I'm sorry, have you even kept a mata mata before? what experience do you have with them? I didnt ask for advice, my turtle is fine and very happy/ healthy. I just wanted to show off his tank. that is all.

The tank looks very nicely decorated! It only seems a little narrow. Can the mata even stretch out on the smaller side of the tank? By the way: It's definitely NO problem for the mata if the water level's that high - in contrary it is very good. People who caught mata matas by snorkeling told me that they hang out in water depths of 2-3 metres, not in shallow water.

the tank is just 18 inches wide and yes, he does have plenty of room to turn around. I have noticed that my mata mata likes to swim from time to time and will do laps around the tank.thank you for your compliments:)

not any good pictures, he is too shy to get but if you look in the last two pics you can see a glimpse of him hanging out in the cinder blocks and then just in front of them. he is about 10 inches long and is feeding on minnows (same as everything else in the tank.)

that setup is awesome

I don't know why people think mata's need shallow water to survive, in their natural habitat they hang out in 3' deep water all the time...if these things were so dumb that they drown themselves they wouldn't be around today - don't believe everything you read on the internet.

The shallow water thing is for the turts confort but I gess it can work still anyways

Nice looking tank! Cool turtle!

Yeah, matas are fine in deeper water. What they don't like is brightly lit tanks. I think the biggest factor in keeping a mata healthy is keeping it in acidic water.

Have you taken look at his activity at night?
