I bought some methylene blue online not realizing how big of a bottle I was buying. It's 32 fl.oz. Well, I don't plan on using that much anytime soon and was wondering how long it would last for? It came as a powder in a bottle and I added distilled water into it.

hello; I have used the stuff. More in the past than lately. It was used in chem and biology labs. In biology labs as a stain for microscope slides.

Use around aquariums for fungal infections mainly by me.

I have also seen a solution used at a fish store back in the 1960's. The shop had plastic containers hanging on the front of the tanks partly filled with a solution of methlyene blue. The nets used to catch the fish were kept in the solution between uses. My take was this may have prevented cross contamination.

The stuff is a permanent dye on some surfaces. Get it on your skin and you will wear it for several days (basically untill the old skin wears away). I have had blue spots on my fingers many times. It will also stain some of the plastic tubing and other things so be very careful when mixing and using it.

If I recall correctly the organic stuff in a treatment tank needs to be removed as it will take up the stain.

Sounds like you have a lifetime supply. You might think about some extra security with regard to storage to help prevent unwanted stains.

Good luck

It has a very long shelf life from what I've read. I've got a sizable container I got from my dad. The label looks to be old, I wouldnt be surprised if it were 15-25 years old. It's something that hopefully you don't have to buy frequently. The old man assured me it was ok.

I've used the bottle a couple times and it worked great, aside from turning my silicone blue/green.

I Just take some basic precautions. Don't let it freeze. Keep the cap tight. Store upright. keep it in a dark container or store it in a Dark place to protect it from UV light. Dunno if thats necessary, but a good practice for most chemicals.
