I have never bought a fish that i cant house for life hence never buying a psudodoras niger or rtc or tsn or arowana, pacu etc i don't think any of these fish are suitable for my 100"x30"x30" (320G) or anything less then 1000G to be honest. I know a lot of you will have these fish in less than 1000G but i wouldn't want to.
The fish I have were sold locally and rescued by me. I went and bought the 300 just to keep up with their growth. I too agree with this article. These fish should'nt be sold to the average consumer.

I'm torn. I agree that there is a definate level of responsibilty to be taken by the aquarist but a license? Not so so sure about that.

I think we need to NOT encourage the sell of fish like RTC and Arapaima (sp) because 99.9999% of people will NEVER have a place to house them.

pros and cons to everything. But if your a responsible pet owner. Then u should be aware of how big something gets before you purchase it and are ready for the change as they get bigger. Everything costs money in any pet related hobby. Me personally dont want to be told what i can and cant have as long as im willing to spend the money to house said animal for the life of the animal or fish or reptile. Just my 2 cents worth.

I'd hate to see the gov get involved myself. I have hounded every lfs (3:() in my area. All listened except the chain store. People around here are learning about the hobby more everyday, just by word of mouth. I do speak "out loud" every time I visit the chain store. Problem is it's 2hrs away.

Good article. When I was the Aquatic Manager at PetsFart I refused to sell pacu and Pangasius.
I got into alot of arguments back then.

im lucky i guess we only have 1 lfs and a walmart here. walmart dont ever have anything really. My lfs wont sale fish to anyone that doesnt have a proper tank for them. I.E RTC or ID sharks they have listed as a 300 gal plus requirment. nore do they carry alot of these fish never seen a pacu in my lfs they will order them but they want to know were its housed. My lfs knows most people who have large tanks and they sale a verity of large tanks on site. Getting the gov involved anymore then it is will hurt the hobby more then help it IMO.

Interesting that we all become self-righteous and feel like we are the answer. I dare say I have made some poor pet purchases in my life and had to remedy them there after. I think it is easy to blame the consumer but when I go into a pet store and see tropical fish housed without heaters in a place where 30 degrees below zero celsius happens fairly frequently I wonder if they know the fish need warmth. When I hear a store sales person say "oh yeah you have a 20 gallon tank throw in a few goldfish and a pleco to clean it it'll work out great" I wonder where we expect people to get the education for the hobby. Why is there no check up on the stores yes that means government involvement in store ownership. We all make mistakes but you don't need a license to have a kid why in gods name would you need a license to have a fish it is only a fish. Social services looks after kids maybe we need animal well being and safety to monitor stores that sell fish under false pretenses.
