More medie and lower turnover vs

I've been using bamboo charcoal as in-sump surface area for a few years: so far so good (touch-wood).
I'd go with pumice if I could - charcoal floats for days to months, which is a headache.

My office 100's filtration is quite literally a 20gal polyethylene chemical-drum 2/3'ds full of charcoal with various invert. fauna, sometimes actively introduced (snails, ostracods, amphipods, some sort of FW sponge or bryophyte, tubifex-looking annelids, hyrda & flatworms, others, though still seeking FW clams), the tank plumbed directly to the top threaded fittings. I then have a mid-size Jebao(sp?) in the tank, cranking a pretty good flow through arguably excessive bottom "decor" habitats of mostly bamboo tubes for the loaches, knives & cats.
The tank has a lot of woody/leafy particulates stirred-up by the knives at feeding-time, so maybe sometimes not super-clear but the water-quality appears to be spot-on & the fish don't seem to care.
