Are mosquito fish guppies or are they killies. I netted a bunch of them and I put them in the guppies breeding tank. I want to get some new breeds going instead of inter breeding the same old guppies. good idea or not?

I imagine soon you will seperate them they can make a guppies life miserable.

The male mosquitos aren't as bad as the f mosquito but still bad compared to guppies .

There's quite a difference between the Gambusia genus and Poecilia genus. For one, Gambusia are built for predation on insect larvae. They have a large mouth which they also use to inflict damage during disputes. They can be quite a aggressive and tend to be fin nippers.

Poecilia in general do eat a variety of insect larvae but have a completely different jaw setup. They have a grazing mouth which combs rocks, wood, etc and collects algae and diatoms from the surface. They also "comb" the water surface and eat the film on the surface. Their jaws do very little damage when fighting.

I've kept a variety of species from each genus to come up with this guideline.

Now for the classification. They're very different from killifish in fact/science.

-----------Livebearers ----------------------Killifish
Kingdom: --Animalia---------------------------Animalia
Phylum: ---Chordata--------------------------Chordata
Class: -----Actinopterygii---------------------Actinopterygii
Order: ----Cyprinodontiformes-----------------Cyprinodontiformes
Family: ----Poecilidae-------------------------Fundulidae
Genus: ----Poecilia/Gambusia------------------Fundulus

Now another thing. Killifish vary immensely and are one of the most diverse families of fish. There are continual spawners, annual spawners, substrate spawners, mop spawners, etc.

Yes they look a like in some ways and they both have fins and gills but they're not closely related.

Just wanted to clear that up.
I know they're not the same genus.
I said "Guppies AND the wide ranging genus Gambusia are livebearers."

I don't know much about breeding guppies. I'm just good at. Well that's not true. I know about the breeding than the actaul fish. But I am good at it.
