Manzanita wood is ideal for a moss tree the way they branch out and their twists and turns can serve as roots of a tree in any aquascape.

Moss can be glued onto any surface but for this application, I prefer to wrap moss onto the wood with thread. It’s definitely more work but worth the effort.

My all time favorite moss…the Fissidens Fontanus. Feather-like…very delicate and slow growing.

The following shows 4 months of growth under high light with co2 injection:

Another Fissidens Fontanus moss tree:

Java moss trees from awhile back:

Problems to deal with: Black Beard Algae and trimming. Unsightly and can get out of hand if not dealt with. I treat the problem with hydrogen peroxide.

Or the algae can be removed manually:

I find it easier to remove the tree out of water and spray with hydrogen peroxide…wait a few minutes then rinse before putting it back. Good time to trim when out of water.

My other 2 moss tanks are fine but they have shrimp, is it only shrimp that helps? I’ve tried hydrogen peroxide, algae killer liquids from 2 hour aquarist. I’m about to give up on that first tank, too much bio load and no shrimp or snails (they all get eaten). Just can’t do moss

I’ve been using glue but I find it doesn’t seem to get the moss to attach itself to the wood, instead it grows from the glued attachment out. If I used string would it be more attached growth.

That’s definitely a mess but salvageable. I’ve been there. It’ll require multiple water changes, scrubbing on the hard scrapes with a toothbrush or something similar…and time. Manually remove as much of the hair algae off the moss as you can and treat with hydrogen peroxide. The issue is due to the nutrients in the water column and too much lighting. You have to play around and dial in on that. I do not have this problem with my low tech but I do not have the lush, faster growth compared to my high tech tank. My lights are on timers, which helps a great deal…6-8 hours works for me.

Now you just showing off how well you grow moss. LOL
Looks stellar.

If you figure out how to sort out that tank please post here as I have 2 tanks with moss that looks exactly like that. Can't put shrimp in the one as there are loaches in there so a solution would be well appreciated.

I’ve tried everything with my one that has loaches, it’s ironic because you get loaches so you don’t get snail infestation but snails are helpful.
