The container in the pic is one of many 28 quart rubbermaid containers I use for growing superworms thats how all the ventilation holes got on the side. (dont think they are necessary since I check on the containers daily or at least every 2 days removing the lid and adding bedding and/or potato as necessary)... of course there was late march of last year when I broke my leg and didn't get back to them for nearly 2 weeks. They were still doing well and had *alot* of potato so they were fine and most still had bedding and potato to eat. *stops going off topic for this paragraph anyway*

The dimensions are 22.9 x 16.8 x 5.9. At first I plan to use PVC pipe for hideouts and white sand as substrate. Later I may get crafty and make plaster homes they can back up into. Once the crayfish and java moss get growing really well I'll be looking for a red ear sunfish or 2 maybe even a rockbass to put in my 55 gallon hex which believe it or not I have owned for nearly 15 years and never used! They will be fed earthworms, pellets and the crays => The pellets are for nutrition as I doubt a 100% cray diet is healthy and the worms will be a favorite for them to eat I'm sure (and I have a good supply in the yard)

I have 10 gallon tanks and one I believe is 30 (that 30 is a tank I got as an early teenager as is over 20 years old and has not been used in most of those 20 years =P). I went with the 28qt tubberware container to start with because its short has more floorspace than the 10's and is easy to modify. If I want a deeper container all I have to do is put that lid on it in fact I am looking for one that is empty now without any luck.

What do you think? Is plaster a good material to use for making caves? Bad idea to use rubbermaid containers?

The crayfish will eat the java moss. I have these crayfish and they even managed to get my floating plants once they learned that there was floating above. I use sand in the bottom but I also covered the sand with lava rocks to provide refuge for the babies. All in all it is start and hope you are successful.

The only tank i use fake plants in is my cray tank... gives the babies places to hide from the adults and they don't eat it... so win/win...

2 years ago I brought home crayfish from the platte river. They would chew on plant matter but would wolf down earthworms. I wonder if I should be thinking about live foods for the marble crays.

I saw cultures for whiteworms someone is selling for $21.00 including shipping and a youtube video of how they are grown. No earthworm culture could ever grow as fast as whiteworms! That and I assume crays like to each have their own worm better. Even a small whiteworm culture would produce more whiteworms than I could feed what I have at the moment (if kept out of the fridge).

Someone showing a way to culture white worms...

The only culture for whiteworms that I could find to buy in the US is $21 total for a 16oz culture. There is a seller on aquabid selling a culture but it comes from the UK... Anyway decided to go with grindal worms to start and bought a $13 auction on aquabid.

in the US, we call them grindal worms. there's 2 available on ebay right now, 3 if you include the one from canada.

I feed my marble crays pellets, flakes, fish, shrimp... never had to feed anything live and they have babies like crazy!

I got the crays about 1-1/2 weeks ago...

Took another pic and the tank is obviously cycling (PH is remaining at about 8.0). The moss was nearly destroyed by the crays. I moved what was left into a cutoff bottle. Its been too close to the air stone, alot of crayfish poop and cucumber pieces made it inside and is all over the java moss. It was dieing anyway... or so I thought. The origional stems are dark and not growing at all but there are new bright green stems growing off of some of them now. Next pic was taken moments ago.

Other than feeding, vacuuming out most of the poop, replacing that water, turning the lights on and off, testing the ph and trying to keep a single leaf of duckweek alive I dont do much with it (maybe 5 minutes a day or so if that).

How much did you pay for them? They look EXTREMELY tiny. I sell 2"ers for $5 on ebay.

$13.00 for 10 delivered. I received 11 and seller said 15 were shipped. Only 3 are growing noticably and they are the 3 largest. They were anywhere from 1/2" to just under 1" body length.
