My original 30/40 is just your normal red garnet. The new 36cg is darker red garnet. Sizing is about the same (36cg slightly slightly slightly larger grain), both very crystal looking sand (looks awesome). It's hard to show off the new garnet properly with the ****ty lights I have on the 270g. The 150g has a variety of light so the sand color will vary depending on my light (pink/bright red/dark red). I think I would be satisfied with just the 30/40; its a lot cheaper and does a great job of bringing out contrast in my bichirs. My bichirs don't appear to look any different on the 36cg.
