Sorry to hear about your losses. I had a similar experience that took out my EB Jack Dempsey. You should look into a temperature controller. $30ish for a decent one and its an extra layer of protection against overheating your tank. After losing my Jack I wouldn't run a tank without one, and it made it much easier when I had to treat for an unfortunate ich outbreak.

I think I will get some of these, tho its now summer so today I just turned off all heaters and unplugged them. Around September is when I will need them again, that works out with my plans on the new 125gal tank I got.

What brand model do you use.?

So if you all don't know yet I got another 125gal 6ft tank. I was shooting for another TruVu acrylic but they never replied so instead I got a glass one that has never been used.

The stand is homemade but is a beast. It weighs more than the tank by far. It has a 2x4 4x4 frame with marine grade oak plywood and real oak trim.

In July I am going to get an FX4 for it. And the following month the substrate, background, heater, fish.

So I think I have narrowed it down to three tank setups.
1) African cichlid
This would be an all male tank. Peacocks/Haps bought as adult males from The Wet Spot

2) Platinum Jack Dempsey tank
I would get six or so fry from Yankeejack grow out a pair giving away the extras to local MFK members. There would be Swordtails as dithers. No bottom feeders at first till I get a few spawns so no chance of them eating eggs fry.

3)Firemouth tank
Get 7 each meeki and aureus or pasionis. Then either a tall bodied tetras for a dither or get more Roseline sharks to add to the three I have now. Six pictus cats for bottom feeders or Corries. Would be a planted tank with some rocks driftwood very natural looking tho may not be an actual biotope due to both sharks and catfish are not central. Could go Biotope route if any suggestions for dithers and bottom feeders FMs are with in the wild.

So I went and priced out the fish using The Wet Spot's prices.

Tank 1) Africans So surprisingly they have 15 different adult males in stock for a grand total of $565 for 15 different males. I would have to piecemeal this one for sure.

Tank 2) this one by far is the cheapest, $27 for the Swordtails and 60 yo 70 for shipping the JDs so less than one Benny all in.

Tank 3) Firemouths tank. This one is a bit more than the JDs. All in 14 cichlids, 6 pictus cats, 20 Serpae tetras $180

I think I vote fire mouths, I’m not a huge fan of Africans, though they do make for an active fun tank to watch

Sorry to hear about the heater crapping out:/

That tank looks awesome. I can’t wait to see when it’s set up.

I kinda like the sound of tank 3 too. All sound good, but I think the firemouths would be pretty cool to observe.

I never see my Pictus cats. Probably going to try to move them since its an unecessary increase on the bioload. I admit they are pretty cool when I see them though.
