Trying to attach pix

These pix are a few months old.

Thx to all advice and info. Looks like a little more patience will be needed.
The lights are not that bright as I am trying to control cyanobacteria ( main reason I stopped the pellets, too much left overs)

Remove the majority of your gravel, it is easier to keep your tank clean. I have a 3 big dovi in a a custom 240, after removing the gravel my water quality was much easier to maintain.

If by "whited out" you mean the lighter color, I'm thinking the camera flash did that. I have minimal photo skills, and like you hear on this site all day long, my photos do no justice. His colors are nice, better when courting the female. Mine are F1 Nics.

Great looking pair. You could try using the floating pellets, and i keep tinfoils, silver dollars since they are cheap, and plecos in my tank to help eliminate the mess. but if your breeding then pull pleco when theirs eggs cause it will eat them at nite. I have switched to floating for same reason. now the pellets hang out on top for a lil bit and they eat them after they soften up. and the pellets are always gone within a half hour. I stopped using pellets for a lil bit due to mess and when i started back up i didnt think they would take them again. but every fish is different. good luck with yours and keep us updated.

At 9 inches, your male should not be skittish, especially if you have had him for nearly a year now, here's a question, how much traffic goes through the fish tank area, do you spend a lot of time in front of the tank?

The tank is in the living room in our house, very little "through traffic". I walk up to the tank several times a day. There is a sofa about 7-8 ft. in front of the tank where we relax and watch the fish. Sometimes they hide while we are sitting on the sofa. Female is much more skittish than the male.

My suggestion would be to add some floating plants at the top, dims the light and makes them feel more secure.

I would say keep the gravel, looks tons better and with a bit more effort on gravel vacs and what not its well worth it.
