Very nice tanks and fish, those hybrids are great, they look very huge.
They get massive. They're totally cool fish, but they (and all these big cats) require a very large time and financial commitment. I love them, but this is only possible because both my husband and I are totally into it. Instead of date night, we do fish stuff. It's our quality time.

What kind of liner was it, and how big were the cats? I've found that their spines are significantly duller as they have grown, but their strength and size is crazy. I would be concerned that at this size they wouldn't just poke a hold, but shred it. I'm specifically looking at the Firestone liners, but can't seem to get any first hand experience from anyone.
It is an "Intex" pool liner. The ones causing the damage are 36" or more & close to 40 pounds. Yes they not only poke holes, but they put large gashes (Shred) the liner.
I could put my fist through the last hole they made. Don't know how long the 45 mil liner would last. Their new tank is being lined with fiberglass.
I had looked into fiberglass, but there is some serious complications to that with having to build the pond where I keep all my fish. I could see some bad gill destruction due to any fiberglassing in the fishroom. However, Brian at Ocean Blue has been working with some material that has sparked my interest. I'm going to be looking into more, but it seems really promising. It might be my solution.

That's your problem right there. It's an intex pool not a 45 mil Firestone liner. That 45mil liner is at least twice as thick and definitely more durable than the intex pool liner. I've run both of those setups in the past.
They also make a 60 mil liner if you're worried about it that are more designed for long term public use like park ponds etc.
Personally I think it will be fine with a 45mil liner but to err on the safe side the 60mil can't hurt. It just becomes a little more "interesting" getting it to flatten out in the corners as it gets thicker and more rigid.
Yeah, I've thought about going with the 60mil to eliminate shred problems. However, I might end up with this other 'stuff'. I want to know more about it before I recommend anything, but Brian's had some good success with this material. I've never seen anyone use it before.

+1 from me. They are all great looking and seem very well cared for. The Giraffe is my favorite tho. There is one or 2 at the lfs by me and I want to grab one but then responsibility grabs me because it will be a minute before I build a monster fresh....the monster salt has to come first. Keep us posted for sure I love seeing them!
Oh, Bernard is fantastic. IMO, giraffe cats are under rated as pets. You could keep just a giraffe, and have a wonderfully interactive pet. Good for you though on knowing what you time scale is.

When I built my pond out back I used a 45mil Firestone liner. We took a hammer, shovel, and even a few whacks with a drywall cutting hand saw to a piece and although the saw did eventually shred it, it took some force. Mild slashes at it did not tear it. Just throwing that out there but I know those cats are powerful.
That's good to know. After handling these cats, I know their strength, and they are only getting larger. I'd be very worried about a 45 mil liner. As my bedroom is downhill from this tank, I'm not sure I'd sleep well at night knowing all this.

i love looking in the 3 black catfish they are so cute
They are Oxydoras nigers. And they ARE cute! Ugly, fat, and ready for battle, but their personalities are cute as hell.
