Get an underwater camera This is really cool and all. I mean really cool. Particularly as a hatchery, but as a hobbyist, this doesn't do much for me. I literally have a chair sitting in front of my African tank and once a day I spend a few minutes in that chair watching them eat. Checking out the behavior. Seeing who is beating on who. Who might be pairing up. who's growing. Who's coloring up. Etc.
That's why I do what I do. Only being able to see color from the top or by taking the fish out of the tank doesn't do it for me....
On a side note concerning the letting plants do the filtering. See my Avatar? That thing went 3 months without filtration. The canister crapped out and I didn't notice it for a few months. All it had was an air stone. I didn't lose anything. Had some Angels pair off in that tank during that time.
I still don't have the balls to let it run without the filter though. Particularly now that I have removed some plants because the Angels couldn't swim more than an inch....

In my Green House i've had some aquariums with fishes and no mechanical filtration. Only plants. And the fishes were ok and reproduced. It depends on the size of the tank and the size and amount of fish.TheFanatic;1593137; said:

I totally agree on both counts. Like I said, I went 3 months with nothing but an airstone and plants to filter the tank and I had fish breeding....severum1;1593307; said:

I didn't forget what you told about the Leds over the tanks at night. I'm going to do it some day.
I have the same problem in my outdoor pond in the summer months with turtles, they go in then cant get out.The pond freeze solid in winter. Also birds fall in and cant climb out. I put a little 2x4 in a spot that is not seen easily and they find their way out. No more deaths. Works good.severum1;1502490; said:I photographed this litle lizard.

Your green house is wonderful. You should be very proud. Im sure the fish feel natural in them. It looks wonderful. For your wind power and oxygen, what about if you use a windmill to run a water pump like farms do, pump it up into a holding tank where it flows into cascading series of waterfalls, just think how wonderful the moving water will sound as it flows over the rocks. i have 6 large tanks and i dont use a single air stone. I let my water level be a couple inches low and the water from the filter outflow drops to the surface creating oxygen and you can see the air bubbles.
