Mystery hybrid ?

I don't know what's worse: the fact that everyone automatically goes to "hybrid!" when looking at an unfamiliar fish...or the fact that nowadays they're probably right! :)

I'm no cichlid guy, but to me that fish doesn't look like a JD, nor a Firemouth nor a Convict. Shape seems wrong. My guess would be some sort of Amphilophus?

@duanes

I genuinely don't know where everyone is seeing JD, at ALL. I see nothing jack-like about that fish at all.

Looks Amph to me too. But not pure, I agree on that front.

Figured I’d give my two cents lol. I’m also no expert but I can totally see the possibility of a hybrid Amph. To me, I’m seeing convict, especially with the barring around the head and face area. Could be wrong and If we’re being realistic it’s probably a total toss up as to what the fish really is.

I'm no expert either but interestingly i was at the fish store a few weeks ago and got 6 firemouth juvies. They were housed with the jds in the store. Once home and in the tank i noticed i got five that looked as expected...1000005989.jpg1000005980.jpg
And one that stood out as unique

Again I'm no expert and it may be a jd mixed in the bag, or some other mystery fish but after reading your post it seemed so similar i had to share

That looks like a normal juvie Jack Dempsey to my untrained eye.

Just a regular JD

Original one definitely has convict in it, no way to tell what the rest could be
second batch of fish is just a regular jd and firemouth

Just an update, has gone through a growth spurt the last couple months and is about 4inches maybe abit bigger, a lot of personality spend majority of the day begging for food lol living in a community cichlid 180
