I inherited this unit, has media & water filled up. Plug it in & it sounds like a loud whining sound but no filter action. has a start knob but it's too easy to turn so not sure if this is broken. heard something about priming it up? what does that mean? or do I just have a broken unit? thx all

You can actually get the manual for the FLuval Canister Filters online that will walk you through setting it up. Just google "Fluval 204 manual". Priming it is necessary to get the water flowing to the canister so that when you turn on the unit it doesn't get damaged.
i have a new fluval i was trying to figure out this morning, it was intense. but i got it now. having the outlet above the water level might have made this a lot easier. thx everyone, I am such a dunce! reading feedback, re-reading the manual & then a little deducing on my own - it's the starter key/knob that has to be pumped (only 4-5x's!) - not the water flow lever!! Duh!! so I am a flowing finely. thx again!
