need ID aequidens species?

Most likely Cichlasoma amazonarum or less likely Aequidens tetramerus. Without knowing from where they originate it's not possible to know.
I have those and they are definitely different. From the colours, markings and the jaw. These guys jaws open wider, I've seen them eat bigger tetras from the store I got them. My cichlasoma amazonarum are with bonita tetras and mollies. I've never lost any other than some of the fry.
 
There are a wide variety of fish labeled and described as both of those species.
