Need info. New to jaguar cichlids.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If its a single wet pet fish your after your going to need more patients with mota's. From my experience they can be quite shy at first taking a longer to come to there own.
I've found mota's to be more aggressive towards other fish, but not so aggressive towards there keeper.
Motaguensis on average will reach 12 to 13inch and managuensis a thick bulky 16inch. So bare in mind that a 16inch parachromis is loads bigger than a 12 to 13inch specimen.

Ya that makes alot of sense now. The LFS mislabeled the mota and it said mang. I did all my research on mangs not motas. I've had it for 3 days and it still won't eat anything I come to the tank it hides. I don't remember my African cichlids being this shy.

above a young female motagensus with a lot of growing to do.
The name jaguar seems to b a generic/ catch all term these days, for at least 4 species of Parachromis.
P managuense
P motaguense
P multifasciatum
P friedrichsthalii
There is also a location variant called P sp La Cieba (fry below)

To me, a 125 gal is large enough for 1 individual, no other cichlids, minimal for an adult.
Below friedrichsthalii (possible female at about 1 minute) filmed in a cenote near Tulum Mexico

There is a lot that goes into a cichlid being shy or outgoing. Decor, light, tankmates, size, etc.
Is this a small fish in a 125 gallon tank alone? What is the tank setup like, can you post a picture? Small cichlids tend to be shy to avoid being eaten by birds, They don't know there are no herons in your living room. If they all swam up to the surface at a small size, they wouldn't last long in the wild. African cichlids you mentioned; they usually are not kept solo, and small cichlids will be a lot less scared if there are others in the tank. Also overhanging decor and things to hide under that are in the upper reaches, go a long way. If there is nothing in the upper half of the tank, the fish will feel like a sitting duck. Once they are full grown adults they tend to not care as much about these things, but at a small size especially, they do.

it can be shy up to 2 weeks or longer. Keep the lights off above the tank so that it can see further into the room that the tank is in. Don't stand around watching if it will eat. Just put the food in and walk away. Clean up any uneaten food in about 1 hour.

maybe add tiger barbs or cover to bring him out. my large cichlids often lose their personality for a couple weeks when moved into a new tank. dont offer him food for a week and a half and im sure his feeding response will be great and he’ll probably start begging and building his personality from their on out. youre gonna have to have allot of patience for growing out single wet pet fish.
