My k1 is a year old and still floats, I think you may need to pack more k1 on top so it pushes the rest down, they kind of compete for surface area to float....if you get my meaning?

The best beds I have seen are jam packed with k1

Are you sure you have enough air? Even my one bioreactor that doesn't have much media in still stays in a suspended spot and turnsover.

beside the amount of air... one thing to considered is the placement of the air.. it need to created a current for the k1 to rotates around from top to bottom and just not floating on the top. you don't want to cover the whole bottom of the chamber with air. that will canceled out the flow and everything just staying at the surface. i found it best to have 1 long air tube running front to back or side to side (2 if your chamber is larger than 1 cf) . Also, how come K1 is not very popular on this site?

My k1 is not used as moving bed, I have over 150 gal sump and I have filled some space with k1 the fact that lone pieces float makes me think that if you add air it would float all the more but if you add more k1 than the surface area can support (just in pure volume terms) the the air creates turnover and the buoyancy means that there is a constant turnover...only theory.

i,m fluidising my 800 liter k1 reactor using an airtech 70,which at a meter deep is putting out about 60lpm which keeps this size tank boiling nicely.the airstone is 1foot long piece of 1" dia pipe with loads of one sixteenth" holes .

What volume of k1 is in there?

100 pieces on the top would do nothing, I imagine it is still jam packed?
