i almost got mine on pellets they will eat cichlid food sticks but only when there wet and are soft i'll try to post pics of mine gulping down something but i think any true gar would out grow a needlenose gar and would eat it spotted gars get around 3'-4'

in aquaria florida/spotteds max out around 2' maybe a little more. either way a needlefish would stand a chance.

i've seen a HUGE alligator gar at an aquarium!

spotted gars look better if they were a little bigger.haha

AROUND being the key word i've seen 3' plus gars in tanks but it takes a while but you do have a point they do stay smaller in tank it might stand a chance proubly would work if the true gar can't eat it but a 12'' needlenose V.S a 24-36'' gar doesn't look to good for the needle but niether are very aggressive so it could work

anyone else getting true/false gars on pellets?

are hujeta and south american gars the same fish?

hujeta's go by lots of names, and they're not true gars either. the are commonly called rocket gars, hujeta gars, freshwater barracuda, south american gars, and plenty others.

they're fun fish, i have three, can't get them off of live no matter how I starve them, well, except for blood worms, two of the three will take bloodworms.

lots of people have true gars that eat pellets but most characins are pretty picky

alot of times there are differn't fish southamerican gars are useually pike characins around here but people call alot of fish by alot of differnt names so a common name really doesn't do much sadly many petstores don't use scientific names

would they go for freezedried bloodworms?

The ones at the store will eat frozen krill, but not pellets.

i was able to get my florida gar on pellets in one day after i first got him in July
