Man, that’s not what I was expecting to hear today. I always enjoyed reading about him and to find out he died is saddening. I hope that whatever you do next brings you as much happiness as he did.
Those abrupt mysterious deaths are really a miserable part of the aquarium hobby. My condolences.
But let's face it: there are human beings who appear outwardly to be perfectly healthy...and who then keel over dead in a supermarket or on the sidewalk as a result of a burst aneurysm or some other near-instantaneous internal glitch that could not be foretold. No reason to suspect that fish and other animals are immune to similar things. I think it's pretty clear that you did well by this puffer; just bad luck.

If you are looking for another puffer then the Tetraodon schoutedini are lovely, albeit expensive. Could keep a few in a tank like that
