New T. ellioti with fin fungus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have treated fin rot bacterial + fungus with erythro or maracyn with success. I would be prepared to heat the tank and use NACL...they might get the ole ich if in that condition shipped. So sorry for the DOA's that stinks. Maybe if you get more fish from them in the future throw in a few more Ellioti. I hope Fungus cure does the trick and you don't get any secondary infections. good luck!

Not saying your doing this, but.......just
be careful with heat, many fungal types spread and grow faster and more virulent, at water temps, at or above 80'F.

API Fungal cure ingredients are Acrflavine hydrochloride, and Malachite green oxalate, only slightly different than NoxIch which is Sodium Chloride and Malachite green

Sorry to see this from a vendor. They should know better than to ship pretty much ANY central American species larger than 1-1.5" in the same bag together if they wanted them to arrive intact. Typically by 2" most CA species are capable of taking each other out in the small confines of a bag. If they don't kill each other then for sure they will tear each others fins apart. Poor shipping method. Also, T. ellioti is not a valid species which the vendor should know. They haven't been valid for over 20 years. These will be Thorichthys maculipinnis.
the recommended meds everyone mentioned should fix the fin issue if it is indeed a disease and not just torn up from the other fish during shipping. My go to meds here are a malachite green & formalin combo, with Nitrofurazone and rock salt all at same time. Since the vendor already has them ID wrong and shipped them terribly you might as well add general cure for peace of mind. good luck!

Does anyone know if it's even worth dosing with API Fungus Cure that "expired" two years ago? I can't get a new box, so not sure if it's still going to do much with the package I have. That's why I opted for the Kanaplex.

Okay great, I suspected as much but wasn't sure. I'll do a 90% water change then redose with salt and add the Fungus Cure. Thanks!

Yes, I know that ellioti is outdated, and I know they're maculipinnis now - however when I was typing up the original post on my phone I couldn't remember how "maculipinnis" was spelled and so just threw ellioti up because I could spell it correctly offhand and knew people would know what I was talking about :p

And yes, I agree that they should have been bagged individually, but the vendor is a friend of mine and while he is extremely strong in his knowledge of African cichlids, he's only got a basic knowledge of most CA cichlids. I can see why he would have THOUGHT they would have been okay, being that they are typically quite non-aggressive as far as CAs go, but like you said those of us who really know American cichlids know better than doubling up in close quarters. I'm sure it's lesson learned for him, and while a pain in the ass for me and obviously bad for the fish, he did refund me for the DOAs immediately. I've decided I'm going to suck it up and just make the drive to the store myself tomorrow (it's about 4 hours each way) to pick up 5 more in person and make sure they get bagged individually for the trek home.

After peeking in on the QT tank (which still houses all the fish that came in, I haven't separated the one with the fungus at this point) this afternoon, he seems to be actually doing remarkably better. I totally forgot about it but this morning when I did a 90% water change on that tank, not only did I re-dose the salt and Kanaplex but I also threw in a whack of Indian Almond Leaves. I was rummaging about in my fish meds drawer and found them - leftover from my betta breeding days about a year ago. I know from personal experience how much good a strong dose of tannins can do for bettas, so figured WHY NOT, can't hurt. Water is now a nice deep tea colour and already the fungus growth has either fallen off or disappeared, leaving just a slightly white tipped edge on the damaged dorsal. So I think I'll continue this course of action for now and see how he does in the next few days before I bust out the API Fungus Cure.
