Newbie Stuff: how often do I either clean or change HOB filter media/catridge?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would take out the carbon cartridge and cut some coarse sponge to put in there instead. I attached a pic of what I use on a cheap Aqueon 75 filter in place of the cartridges. Every week at water change time I squeeze out the sponge in some tank water I've removed to get all the gunk out of the sponge. I use this filter for mechanical only because I also have a canister filter and an AC110 hob on this tank. What kind of fish do you have? Do you have other filters on the tank? If your fish are getting big you may want better filtration to keep up with them. In your case I would not touch the bio filter (stage 3) so as not to disrupt your BB.

Thanks so much! I appreciate the advice & the ok. Is a BIG help! I've got an Aqueon to set up for 20G too. The AquaCulture has similar setup so leaving out the cartridge & replacing with sponge sounds feasible. I have a rapidly growing Goldfish Posse of 5 (& looking for them new home already)!
Other filter stuff: 2 large sponges attached to air pump, 2 bags ceramic rings under flow of water, & poly floss in front part of AquaCulture. If it was enough I would never have any ammonia or nitrates! I'm doing large water changes (60--70%) at least 1 1/2--2 times a week. I'll definitely NOT be moving that stage 3 part, but I think I got a perfect marketing to put in to replace carbon.
With the "stage 3" in place, should I replace both carbon plates? Thanks to everyone & all pics are greatly appreciated.

Ah yes, goldfish are messy fish. Yes, I would replace both carbon cartridges with the sponges. I have not had to replace the sponges I have at all. Just rinse out each week in used tank water and put back in. You'll save so much not having to buy those cartridges . You should look into the Aquaclear 110 hob filters. Best hob in my opinion.

Good morning! Cut a 4 x 4 x 1 sponge & tried to use that. It did nothing but float behind the plastic stage 3 grid! I thought it needed to at least stay against the grid thing. I don't have larger size sponge. Should I cut a 2" piece & stick them in there beside each other? Or should I just put in 1 new carbon cartridge?
Thanks all!

Hi! General question: what is TOTM? & what am I voting for?
Tank of the month, we have TOTM and POTM (photo of month) contests monthly. There is a link at the bottom of my posts to the rules.

To answer your question simply and big picture- You've got bio media, mechanical media, and (maybe) chemical media in most filters. What you want is for the water to first hit a more coarse sponge, then your bio/chemical media, then (optionally) to go through a finer layer such as filter floss, and you don't want water bypassing the media. Most HOB filters use a pump in the bottom of the filter; closest to this would be your coarser filter pad, then on top of that I would put your bag of bio-media and if desired, chemical media like carbon. What you don't want is water coming into the filter and having a path to flow out without going through the medias. Some people might use a slightly different order of these medias, the result will be more or less the same, but you want the finest media last, common sense.

As far as maintenance, Bio media (ceramic rings, lava rock, etc) can be swished around in tank water (I use the bucket of dirty water from water changes) and put right back. Don't let it dry out or wash it under the tap. This should more or less never be replaced.
Chemical media usually would be changed monthly, may vary depending on the type. Coarse mechanical media like a sponge, I usually rinse the same way I do the bio media, squeeze it out in the dirty WC water. Every few months you may need to replace it, or may not. Fine media like floss, or fine sponges, usually will be too hard to get clean, and will be replaced as needed (as it gets gunked up) without affecting the tank's cycle, since the bio-media will be intact.

Thanks for all that! I think I may have done okay so far with filter. If I did this wrong, y'all can tell me: I've been putting small amount of the poly floss stuff in HOB filter in the front so that the water passes over it right before it goes back into the tank. And yes, it's friable, gets dirty quickly, & I've been replacing it with a 6 x 6 piece every other day.
I couldn't get sponge to stay in place inside HOB next to the "stage 3" bio grid , so I rinsed new carbon cartridge in tank water & threw the old one away. (Hope to get 6 x 6 x 1" which is the correct size. ) Now, I have kinda small ceramic rings in net bag inside tank. Should I try to place a few of those on top of the floss? That would make water drawn in going over carbon cartridge first, then rings, then floss. I've not tried it for fear it will overflow filter water into the floor.
I'm not very confident about my drop cord setup if water starts pouring out of the filter because I put too much into it. I'm still gonna go look at HOB filter pump-up on YT by aquarium co-op.
You've all been so amazing! Thanks to all from me & the Fishy Five!

Ideally your bio rings would be inside the filter so that the water flows over it and the bacteria living in it can carry out the nitrogen cycle. It may work as well in the tank if there is flow on it, but much better inside the filter because you know 100% of the water in the tank will be passing through the filter and coming into contact with the good bacteria.
