So I was just having a little day trip out to my not so local fish store ( it's an hour and 20 mins each way ) but they have some seriously cool stocking. There isn't that many specialist shops in Ireland.

Came across these guys and I've never seen them before. They are absolutely beautiful fish and I just had to have them!

Are these cichlids easy to find in the hobby? And what do you know them as? They seem to have a few names.

I was lucky enough to pick up a mated pair.

Not common, not uncommon. Awesome fish, multiple color formats. Mild for CA cichlids
 
They are Hypsophrys nicaraguensis.
They only Central American that lays non-adhesive eggs.

Below a couple females in the foreground, male behind
Females don't have the spotting in the unpaired fins.
They like to spawn in caves, and are usually great parents, producing lots of fry
They were quite popular in the midwest where I lived, and available.

Awesome photos and thanks for all the info! I'll need to get a clay pot for them so. That can be tomorrow's job.

How long do they tolerate their young for? Have you successfully kept any of the fry in with the parents until they are a decent size?

Hey duanes duanes it's been a week and the Nics are settling in nicely. Well the female more so. She's pretty active and explores the tank.

The male is very skittish. Hides any time I go near the tank, even to feed.

Do you find they are shy fish in general? Any tips? :asianarow

I don't have anything else in with them. What dithers would you recommend? They are also showing breeding behaviour so would dithers survive the aggression?
