I've seen vids of them out swimming around with others. Is it because they are in a school and feel comfortable?
I have seen this of jag cats but not false jags. Don’t know many with groups of false jags. In groups they will feel comfortable and i assume likely come out.

In my experience, it's not a good thing if the fish is swimming about in the open when lights are on. I had Jags and False Jags before. One Jag appeared one day staying out in the open, I thought cool, never did that. Next day it was dead.
My last surviving False Jag only comes out once in awhile, gobbles food and goes hide for months. It looks like Jabba the hutt.
