O. heterospila tank mates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's pretty much how I was anticipating the heterospila to be, not troublesome but hold their own. Thanks for the feedback!

I had platinum HRP's before...they seem a little smaller growing than the regular ones. I had one male with a little nuchal hump though...he was mean for an HRP... he chased a Sagittae around a bit when the Amph was younger. Then the tables turned. I will say the Leucistic HRP's are kind of cute...but the yhave a lil attitude when paired hehe.
Talked myself out of the Thorichthys species. Out of curiosity, I checked the only other online source that reliably has American cichlids in, and his stock list has white HRPs available which peaked my interest greatly. White HRPs would look fantastic over my black substrate and really pop. I've never kept them before though, but have always heard they are not nearly as aggressive as their convict (nigrofasciata) cousins. Would the white HRP be a viable option in the 8ft tank with the heterospila?

I'm almost tempted to get them and try it, and worse case devote a smaller tank to a pair once formed if they become tyrannical in the big tank...

Yeah I wouldn't expect them to be super peaceful or anything. Just don't want the hyper aggression you get with convicts, aiming for more of a low-mid level aggression...fish that will hold their own no problem but not BE a problem lol.

I've kept rainbows a few times over the years, so I'm pretty well versed with them. Amatitlania myrnae I haven't kept, but not a fish I'm really interested in anyway. Thanks for the feedback.

I checked the Wet Spot list, and beside Petenia splendida, they have a number of Thorichthys species, all low level on the aggression side.

I'm in Canada ;)

After lots of flip-flopping back and forth on this fish or that fish, I have ordered 8 juvenile T. maculipinnis (ellioti) to add in with the heterospila. I also added 6 baby SAE to add in with the group, and 2 more heterospila to add to the four - I ordered 6 originally, but was only sent 5 plus one G. steindachneri by mistake, and then a few weeks after arriving the smallest of the 5 heterospila died for unknown reasons. Other four are doing very well so wanted to get back up to the 6 I planned for originally.

Think that sounds great..should be a pretty group

I hope so! The heterospila are definitely already showing some hints of their future rainbow coloured glory, can't wait to see them mature. And I've never seen the ellioti in person but there's some stunning adults online when I do a video/image search. Will be nice to have a CA cichlid tank with more than one fish it it! 😂

Sounds great! It's all subjective, but I agree, the ellioti / maculipinnis are great looking cichlids.. I personally think they are the best looking Thorichthys I've had including meeki, passionis and aureus.. Though I love meeki too and will always have some in my fishroom.. good luck wit the tank!
