Ok answer this How much filtration (FX6)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm going to drill the tank and overflow box and hold the internal overflow box on with 4 1" bulkheads as the tank is running and I want to be able to have the bean animal installed and continue running the tank in less then an hour.

would there be any added benefit to running an additional cheap canister with just layers of floss and batting to polish water? I just dont know that im convinced that all that goes into a sump would work as well as the equivalent cost of Canister filtration. I am seeing FX6s for $225 to $275 so approximately two for the cost of a sump and pump and plumbing.

Yes you can use a canister to polish the water.
Easy maintenance
Custom made for your needs
Run one pump (or two)
Choose turnover rate for tank
I had canisters and the best decision I made was making my first sump

How would you run 2 canister filters in the tank? Like intake and out take locations? I am buying myself another canister filter tmrw and was wondering how or if I should just do one for my 100gallon tank. I was going to buy a Api xp xl or something like that for my 100 gallon tank and then move my old canister filter to my 50gallon tank.

If you have circulation wavemakers then it doesnt matter, if not id put intakes on one end and jets on the other . other option jets in middle and intakes on either end.

When selecting a filter, look at the flow rate on the box. I would like a 6-10x turnover rate, which means if my tank is 10g, the filter must be able to put out minimally 60g/hour.

In your case, the FX6 has a flowrate of 925g/hour. So for a 300g tank, it would turn over approximately 3x per hour. I would get 2 of them.

PS: Thing about MFKers is, we like to over-filtrate :D

Btw, that flow rate is based on no media in it, just the trays. Based on the fx5 granted, but he fx6 has the same impeller/pump. If you fully load it like I do and many others it ends up somewhere around 600 to 650 gpm.

Got the first one showing up today... will order another in a few weeks.
Still not decided on when to get the tank, this time of year its difficult to get any stock shipped anyways because of the temps. None of the local fish shops carry anything of interest to me anyhow, So ill probably shoot for spring or April.
