I would like to know if there is anyone that has any successful experience with Oreochromis tanganicae as I unsuccessfully found out that they do not go in well with other large African cichlids.

Is a large species only tank the way to go?

I recently got rid of my nice looking male and sold it to my favorite fish store. They asked me what it was and I told them. They also asked me how aggressive it was and I told them that they seem to be able to find away to get to most fish and eventually kill them as their efforts may be somewhat laid back but they never actually stop which tends to get to most fish.

Well, being retarded they put this fish in there freshwater show tank with everything under the sun in it. At first they fit in fine and may even get picked on as a Fossorochromis rostratus showed the Oreochromis tanganicae a thing or two when introduced to the tank but then after 2 days of being settled in the Oreochromis tanganicae started to run the tank and dominated all fish and of course tried to kill the largest fish first so the Fish Store had to put him down because of the unavailable tank space, or so I was told. I was shocked that they dispossed of him as I am sure they could find a home for him but he had caused so much financial damage that the Fish Store felt like they did not want to pass on a fish like this to a customer.

If anyone has pics of theirs I would love to see them as I really am interested in keeping them but I guess I will have to wait until I can committ a large tank to a group of them.

I have a foot long male in my 230.

I had it with 10 Neolamps sexfasciatus, and it bullied them a bit too much (was trying to breed them). Moved him to the sump, and he stayed there for about 6 months.

Later, I found myself buying a bunch of Central American, and threw him back in there with everything.

Tankmates:
2 Dovii
2 Flowerhorn (red texas)
4 Midas
4 Red Terrors
4 Synspillums
2 Tuba
1 Marbled Cat
1 Electric Blue
1 Red Empress
2 Firemouths

Firemouths are 3.5", and the Oreochromis will get chased out of their dwelling. Well, so does everything else in the tank, including the 8" Wolves, the 9" Synspillums and the 8" Midas.

2 Midas, 1 Synspillum, both Red texas and the electric blue chase the Orechromis. Now and again, he will come back and chase them around, but it is getting rarer.

You should keep that fish. It is a very hard to find fish (unless they recently started shipping them out).

I don't think it is a very smart fish, at least to cichlid standards. For its' size, doesn't seem to be too tough or aggressive, though now and again he does surprise me.

He ate all my nice anubias that were growing on the driftwood though.

I will post up some pics later on this week. Try to get him while he is testing out one of the other fish in the tank.

Someone must have bred them near me. I bought a bag of 20 fry less than a month ago at a local fish show and put them out in my koi pond. They have eaten all the hair and other algae, recently eat more koi pellets than the koi do and are 5" long not counting the tail with some even larger. Wonder how long they can do well outside in this region? Can't really count them but it seems like I still have close to all I started with.

they will be aggressive and dominant just as the other Oreochromis tend to be
I had one grow to a nice size a few years back and it did rule the tank but didnt kill any of its tank mates though. The Emperor cichlid that I just lost was added as a three incher and would not growpast eight inches untill after my oreo died.
