Oscar tank

The Salvini's look good. How many could i keep in a 180 litre and what would their behaviour be like? How to they feed, what conditions do they like etc...

Also are they widely avalible (I'm in England)

I betcha could get away with a pair in it...male and female...nice little breeding experience...

Males are on average 6"- 8" long.

Are they mean fish? I wouldn't do it all the time but i would like to see them take out a feeder every now and then.

What sort of tanks do they do well in? What sort of filration? Would they go with anything else, for example a pair of convicts?

I don't think you'd want any other breeding fish in that size of a tank if you wanna mix em up.....Salvini are pretty aggro...actaully they are really tough for smaller cichlids...so are breeding Cons...they will try to kill the Salvini if they can.

Salvini are predatory and will eat smaller fish if you have a large one.....they don't really dig much like other cichlids so I'd say you could try your luck with plants if you like real plants and stuff.

a breeding pair of one or the other would be ok but having a pair of both would most likely wind up in really bad injuries or deaths.

75 gallons minimum (imo) for 1 oscar or 2 that get along (breeding pair or 2 females). I don't think you'd be able to keep 2 males in a 75 but then again you wouldn't really know you have 2 males until they reach maturity (~6") and start fighting. also, if you want to keep 2 oscars in a 75 make sure there is excellent filtration. I'd want the water to turnover at least 12-15 times per hour and do 40% minimum weekly water changes and even doing that I'd still keep an eye on the nitrates once they start getting bigger.

If you won't keep an oscar, a breeding pair of salvinis would look nice in this tank, IMO.

I have a 180 with an Oscar , 4 large red hook silver dollars , a foot long Gibbiceps pleco, and some Raphael cats to keep the bottem clean. The Oscar and pleco are very messy so I do 90% water changes weekly.
