Oscar vs Flowerhorn vs Blood Parrot Personality.

Before ive had a flowerhorn and blood parrot, and I always thought the flowerhorn was SO MUCH BETTER he was more active, came right up to me when I fed them and even let me touch his hump the blood parrot was different and was actually kind of shy might have been just mine but I like flowerhorns better.

Yeah my parrots weren't really interactive either, other then the polar trying to bite me. But I've had FH's that were aggressive, interactive, introverted, shy, even had a few that seemed lazy. I used to pet Jr. on his kok but he always bit me when he got the chance. Sometimes I'd let him, but still hated the teeth.

Lol, having both an O and BPs they are all interesting. All four of my BPs have totally different personalities which makes things fun. ONE will let me pet him. They all greet me. My Oscar is a sweetheart, a drama queen, adorable and a bully all at the same time! Gets his head pats and body tickles and plays with a small basketball. Wakes up cranky and throws his weight around at times. He's just over a year old.

The one thing I know about them all is that they have amazing behaviors. The BPs are clever and tactical, they do stuff with a purpose. For example:

My female parrot Patch started laying eggs on the jumbo airstone to aerate them. Less work for her, less fanning. She will also stand on her head and float, or sleep in vines at the surface. Just goofing around.
My male parrot Boss will block access points to his areas with plants and rocks. This is to keep the catfishes out.
My male parrot Tango got annoyed with one of the catfish and pushed him behind a filter, blocking him in with stones. Does barrel rolls sometimes.
My male parrot Kong is hyper aggressive but will see 'monsters' if you wear certain types of clothing. Yesterday after getting home from work I had to remove my hat, coat and scarf because he refused to come out and eat until I did. Silliest fish evah.

When my Oscar wants a petting session he chases the other fish away and comes back to me. 100% rotten.

Key thing to remember is the more you're around the fish the better handle you have on their personality. If you don't interact with them at all you won't get anything back. Sometimes I think people expect a fish to just 'respond' when they do nothing more than feed and leave the room.

My blood parrot was much more of a character than my flowerhorn ever was and I very much regret getting rid of him. He was a 7 inch male and a glass banger and would jump completely out of the worry to bite me. Definitely the best fish I’ve ever had. It is completely subjective to the individual fish though. I think flowerhorns and bloods parrots have very similar potential to be unique just as both can also have pretty plain personality’s. Same probably goes for oscars but I’ve never had one.

Thanks for all your comments guys. Absolutely love to hear about all of their different personalities. Its no wonder cichlids are so popular. Even my smaller rams are fantastic.
Now some people might think me crazy for suggesting this, but have you ever thought of a giant gourami? Pretty much just like an Oscar personality wise but will get far larger. Some even like to be pet. Definitely not as pretty as an Oscar but still gets that same pug-like face to them. Just another option to think about.
I actually have! Gourami are some of my favourite fish and giants seem really good personality-wise. I actually really like how they look too. I saw a 6 inch giant at my LFS and fell in love. But they exceed the size range I'd be capable of getting at this point. Maybe later on down the road I'll be have the opportunity to get one.

Lol yeah when I got mine I got him out of a tank of dwarfs and was told is was just a female. Well a couple weeks later and it doubled it's size and I knew at that point I got a giant rather then a female dwarf. Lol still loved that fish, wish the pleco I had would've never killed him.

I’ve only kept FH and BP, and as beautiful and smart as the FH is, I prefer the BP. Mine is not aggressive at all. He’s gotten along with every fish he’s had as a tank make so far and is very active. I don’t have the space for an Oscar but after reading these posts, maybe in the future :)

He’s incredibly smart and curious. Always trying to fit into anything regardless how small the cave or tree trunk lol I can call him by name and he will come out of wherever he’s hiding and if I ask him where his other friends are by name he will go find them and chase them out for me.

He is a little shy with strangers but once he feels safe he comes up to greet everyone. BO weren’t ever my first pick but I came across him by chance and couldn’t imagine myself with out him. They’re truly wet-puppies lol
