anyone have advice about oscars and african cichlids??? mine seem to get along fine, some say not but is it the type of african cichlid or what?

How big is the O ?

Well the reason some would say not, is because they come from different water conditions; although, I know some african species have proven to be quite hardy.

My best friend has 3 Oscars, and 4 African Cichlids.. He attempted to get a 5th and it got eaten by one of the Oscars, causing its jaw to dislocate. Besides that they co-exist fine. Usually the Africans are too fast and agile and the Oscars are to slow and big to get them. So if nothing has happened by now, I would say you're fine.

the oscar is still a baby and not that much bigger than the african cichlid, they seem to be doin okay, thr first time i put the cichlid in there they acted like there was a face off but never nipped at each other, the oscar chases the cichlid away every now and then when i come in the room or when i feed them but the longer its been in there the better they have acted toward each other

well, they have different water conditions so its beast to say no but i guess the may live together after a while

If they are captive bread and come from an LFS they have probably adapted to the same water conditions. The biggest reason this won't work long term is the Oscar is eventually going to eat the Africans.

I would never mix them but its your tank so do what you want. When the oscar is small the africans will pick at the oscars when the oscar out grows the Africans they will try to eat them. Either fish will be stressed good way to bring on an ich outbreak. But like I said your tank do what you want.

I had a two 6" Oscars get beaten up by my demasoni. I had all the fish in the tank for a while with no problems, but as they mature the Mbuna become very aggressive and the oscars can't defend themselves. I had a 2.5" female demasoni just about peck the eyes out of both my oscars. I tried to make it work, but the Oscar could no longer see their food and would always hide. In addition both oscars fins were shredded. I say don't mix them it's a bad idea. Even my docile Mbuna would nip at my oscars.
