How long would one of these back ups run say.. a heater and an FX5?
I'm looking into these, but unsure of which model to get.
During the winter in my area we occasionally have power outages that last a few hours, some times days.
Would be nice to have these for individual tanks with spare batteries, then a generator to run the rest of the house..

The 1500 model is one of the largest home version that you can get. It depends on how big heater you are running. If just the FX5 alone it may run a couple hours but if you add a 300w heater it can go down to 15 minutes. However they have options of adding a 2nd battery. http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BR1500G&total_watts=200

Now that I look at it, seems expensive for each tank.
Probably better off just biting the bullet and buying a good generator.
Good idea for powering a pump/vital stuff on a single tank though.

I talked to an electrician several years ago and he said they can put in something so that if your power went out, it would automatically start a generator. Not sure what it was or the cost. There is also the photovoltaic route. Use the sun to get free power but they can also run batteries inline so that if the power went out the batteries would run for several hours depending on how much batteries you install. They can make it power the whole house or just several outlets.

I've heard of the photovoltaic route.
That would be optimal, but not while renting. LOL
Eventually, I would like to do that to power an entire house - with that set up you could live off the grid if you chose too. All interesting ideas!

Cant wait to see that plat aro in your tank.

Finished the lighting yesterday. Sorry didn't want to work on Thanksgiving.

Installed another remote controlled outlet for the lights. We didn't want to put it on a timer and run the lights too long. Don't want to take the chance if it tans the fish. I took out the driftwood cause it looks ugly.
