Out Door Tropical Pond (Heating)

hey i am wanting to get a 1000+ sock tank and make my own amazon tropical fish pond i think i know how i am going to filter it and all of that stuff but i am only worried about the winter months. i live in Illinois and the winter temperatures can get to about 20 degrees Fahrenheit would a large regular koi pond heater be enough to keep the temp. up in the winter months or how should i heat this pond? any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

It will be very expensive to heat a pond in the winter.

yeah i figured that. i currently have a 150 gallon stock tank test tropical pond with some small cichlids in it and they are doing great. it is summer here in Illinois about 100 degrees Fahrenheit right now the pond is in the shade and the water has been staying around 78 degrees im hopeing to keep the cichlids alive through winter and if i can maintain the temp right then im going to get a bigger pond. if the temp gets to cold then i will bring the fish inside so they don't die.

Actually its all about how you insulate the pond.
more insulation= cheaper longterm costs.

My pond took 1000 Watts to go from 60 to 80 in my basement, complete with styrofoam lid. Mines half the water volume and inside and it was still a beeotch to heat. I had a 400, 300 and 300 watt eheim. Oh, and that alone was about 45 bucks a month.

I heat my outdoor pond to 70 in the winter for about $60.00 per month on natural gas. But it is fully insulated and covered. It can be done but insulation is the key along with a good heating system.

Should have added the specs, 8'X10.5'X5.5' 3400gal plus 450gal filter volume and we are in the high 20s to low 30s as far as temps and do get snow.
