If you were building a large fresh water aquarium 500 plus gallons, where would you places the overflow boxes? ie; one large center box, two square boxes in each corner, one large trapizoid shape on one end or two small trapezoid shaped in each corner, not in the tank at all, built external to the tank on the back or sides...any set-up more versatile than other, and draw back to any..

The sky's the limit when it comes to external overflow boxes on large tanks.

Here are the overflow boxes on a 4,000 tank install shown on MFK

Here's the back side of my much smaller tank

Each overflow box has two 2" drain holes and four 1" return holes, including return holes back into the tank adjacent to the uptake grids. Wasn't expecting the extra bonus of eight return holes. Gives me more options for the eleven holes for 1 1/2" bulkheads on the top of the tank that I insisted I had to have :) Of course, durso/bean animal plumbing are not an option with these return holes...I would have preferred 1 1/2" returns, but it's all good...

I'd say go with two external overflow boxes along the back. Even my 300 gallon tank has two (internal) overflow boxes.

Get the biggest sump you can fit under the tank and then match your pump with your overflow (dont forget to account for loss in head pressure). And try to get a pump that runs your whole tank 4-5 times a hour. I would go with two in the corners to keep it symmetrical.

Wow this tank is insane, WOW....I think i like the external idea alot plus it allows me to keep all of the tanks foot print.

My overflow boxes on my 450 gallon are on the outside on each side of the tank. Easy to get at for any reason.Plus I can adjust the flow so it is silent!

I'll have to overflows on each end also, but how is it you control the nosie with the flow? Does that red valve in picture also you to flow more water or something?

With that valve I can adjust the water level in the box to whatever I want. The second pipe in the box is an emergency overflow. If the strainer for whatever reason clogs up the water will rise until it gets to the emergency overflow and then it will just drain back into the sump.
