Yes they are venemous.. I had one too but never handled it directly. The three spines on it's head / back have venom in the tips. It's not enough to kill you but I read it can make your arm numb for up to 48 hours.. I guess it depends on the size of the toadfish..

Scats are poisonous as well and they get big. If I were you, I wouldn't get the Scat.
