if he'll only eat sinking foods, try algae wafers if you havent already. their expensive usually, but its one more thing you can give him. when i rescued my big guy, thats all he would touch for months, and it supported him during his growth spurt. so im guessing theres gotta be some good stuff in there:)
All he eats now is algae wafers, the fish flakes i put in there for the guppies and he was stealing the oscars food when they were in the tank with him. i cant wait to be able to feed him "real" food. :headbang2

this goes for any large fish. i have a heavy piece of 1/2" plywood on top of my tank to ensure my pacu dont get out.

I second the Alge wafers. Mine at 6-7inches get sooooo excited when I dangle the Algae wafer bag in front of the tank. They snag one up and dangle it from their mouths until they naw it does enough to swallow. I feed both pacu at least 2 algae wafers daily and a combo of fresh veggies. They love lettuce the most, but it gets the tank so messy.

Looks like I've got some fun to look forward to. I've just brought in and filled a 6 by 4 by 2 foot stock tank - luckily in a conservatory with a concrete floor. Even that's not going to be big enough long term for my red bellied pacu - it's about a foot long now.

Pond pump and pond filters! But will tranferring all existing filtration until the pond filters mature.

'Soggy drysuit' may be very accurate after this move :)

I just need to build a lid...

Haha, yeah, they really are wussies. Such massive size, but not a mean bone in their body. When I moved mine from the 75 to the 220, I had a river running through my living room. They are very strong, and when you try to grab them, they can displace a lot of water very quickly.:grinno:
I don't know where you got your Pacu from but mine are demons, i just added 2 red bellied piranhas in with them and they - the five of them have formed a school, the Pacus are the first to launch attacks, prior to adding the piranhas in, any other wish I added in their tank they would go after as a food item, even fish twice their size, so for you to say they are wussies is absolute malarkey!

The only aggressive pacu I have read about were fed live food. Being omnivores, they can be "trained" to attack anything in their tank. Why people would want their pacu to behave like piranha is beyond me. Ours would never attack another fish in their tank. When we had oscars with them, the only threat to the oscars was when the pacu spooked. In their frightened panic swims to escape some imaginary threat, the pacu could have hit anything in their way.
